 What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over your natural tooth. Our dental team may suggest that you consider dental crowns to restore or strengthen a tooth that is broken, cracked, worn down, decayed, or weakened. Dental crowns can also restore the shape, size, and function of a damaged or discolored tooth. The most common dental crown materials are metal, resin, and porcelain. Resin and porcelain crowns can be fabricated to look like surrounding natural teeth, so it is hard to tell you have a dental crown. With proper dental crown care and maintenance, they can last between five and 15 years.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are a few different types of dental crown materials, and the one you choose may depend on your budget, personal preference, and oral health. We can help you choose the right type of dental crown material for your needs and lifestyle:

  • Porcelain – Porcelain crowns imitate the appearance of tooth enamel and look far more natural than other dental crown materials. They are also ideal for use for patients who have metal allergies.
  • Resin – Resin crowns are less expensive than other dental crown materials but are also more fragile and prone to breakage. They are often used as temporary crowns. They can last around three to five years.
  • Ceramic – Ceramic crowns are also very natural-looking. They are typically fabricated from zirconium dioxide and are very durable. They can withstand heavier forces than other types of crowns and are gentle on your opposing teeth, so you experience less wear and tear on your enamel. They can restore front and back teeth, but the ceramic layers can chip away over time.
  • Porcelain fused to metal – Porcelain fused to metal crowns are very durable but also natural looking. They can be fabricated to match the color and appearance of your surrounding natural teeth. The porcelain coating can chip off over time, and it may wear down the enamel of your opposing teeth. However, they last almost as long as metal crowns and can restore front and back teeth.
  • Metal – Metal crowns can be fabricated from gold, palladium, nickel, and chromium. They rarely chip or break and last the longest of all dental crown materials. They can withstand biting and chewing but are best used on out-of-sight back molars as they do not look natural.

The Dental Implant Crown Procedure

Before we place a dental crown, we will schedule an initial consultation to examine your teeth, gums, and jaw. We may take dental x-rays, and we will take bite impressions of your teeth. We will walk you through the entire dental crown procedure, so you know what to expect. The process will require two dental visits:

  • Initial visit – After your initial consultation, we will prepare your tooth for dental crown placement. We must remove some of your tooth's natural enamel to allow the crown to adhere properly and make space for it. We will file away or build up certain parts of your tooth to create a solid foundation for crown placement or crown replacement. Then, we will take dental impressions of your teeth to send to the dental lab. We will place a temporary crown on your tooth to protect it while we wait for your permanent crown to be ready.
  • Crown fabrication – Your dental crown will be fabricated in an outside dental laboratory. When it is ready, we will call you to schedule your second visit and final placement of the dental crown.

  • Second visit – We will remove the temporary crown on your second visit. We will then check your new crown's shape, size, color, and fit. Then, we will bond the crown to your tooth using dental cement.

Crowns and Dental Care

When you properly care for your dental crowns, you can extend their lifespan and beauty and protect your surrounding natural teeth. Maintaining a good daily oral hygiene routine will reduce your risk of plaque and tartar, bacteria, and dental cavities. Brushing twice per day, flossing daily, and using mouthwash can prevent tooth decay, infection, gingivitis, gum disease, and bad breath. After your dental crown is placed, keep up with this daily oral hygiene routine to preserve your oral health. You should also avoid chewing on ice cubes, hard nuts, popcorn, and sticky foods like toffee, taffy, and caramel. Ask us about being fitted for a custom mouth guard if you grind your teeth or clench your jaw in your sleep. Visit us at least once per year for regular dental cleanings and exams.
